March 14: Behind-the-Scenes: Unshelved at the NAT

Have you ever wondered how many hidden specimens lie in the storage of the San Diego Natural History Museum? Wonder no more as they unpack, unshelve, and share the 8 million specimens they have collected over the last 143 years in their newest exhibit, “Unshelved: Cool Stuff from Storage.”

Get an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour designed for San Diego EMP members guided by Bradley Tsalyuk, Exhibits Project Manager, and Michael Field, Director of Experience Design. They will share their experiences with taking on this large-scale project along with the challenges and successes of making this exhibit come to life.

Bradley Tsalyuk – Exhibits Project Manager
Bradley Tsalyuk is an emerging museum professional who utilizes his background as an artist to connect art, science, and natural history. He joined the San Diego Natural History Museum as the Public Programs Project Coordinator in 2015, and now holds the position of Exhibits Project Manager. As Project Manager, he collaborates with colleagues within the exhibits department and across the institution to conceptualize, develop, and construct permanent and temporary exhibitions.

Michael Field – Director of Experience Design
Michael Field has been designing, fabricating and evaluating museum exhibitions in Balboa Park for 33 years. He has been involved in the planning and creation of hundreds of exhibitions and several historic building restoration and modernization projects with an emphasis on sustainability. His lifelong passion for art, history, and science help him translate ideas into engaging experiences for visitors of all types. He is currently the Director of Experience Design at the San Diego Natural History Museum.

November 15: Behind-the-Scenes: Game Masters at the Fleet

November 15 | 5:30 – 7:30 PM | The Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park

Have you had the opportunity to check out the Fleet Science Center’s newest exhibit, Game Masters? Now is your chance! Join San Diego Emerging Museum Professionals and Society for Experiential Graphic Design, San Diego to tour the exhibit and learn about the process to prepare it for its San Diego debut. Ashanti Davis, Exhibit Supervisor, will share her insights and show us some hidden jewels. After the tour, we’ll get an opportunity to play classic video games and engage in some friendly competition!

July 12: Behind-the-Scenes: Chinese Historical Museum

After: Drinks & discussion at The Whiskey House

Join the San Diego Emerging Museum Professionals for a special tour of the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum’s galleries, including a fresh look at a local political, economic, and cultural legend in their newest exhibit, “Unseen Portrait: The Art of Tom Hom”. The program will focus specifically on the involvement of the local Asian community in the opening of the museum. We hope you get inspired to think about the relationships in your community, and how we can continue to build spaces for connection and change. The tour will run approximately one hour.

Afterwards, we adjourn to The Whiskey House, located directly behind the museum at 420 3rd Ave between Island Ave & J St for drinks and conversation.
